Captain Temba Bavuma guided South Africa to a declaration of 425-9 in their Test against Australia, scoring 179 in a 552-minute innings that exceeded his previous best. The Proteas were 110-6 on day three before declaring with half an hour left. Scott Boland took five wickets for 81 runs, contributing to Australia's struggles.

Bavuma's performance came after South Africa started at 12-2 on day one, with the captain emerging in the gloom to build his innings. The hosts' decision to bat on after reaching 425-9 raised questions about whether they had enough time to secure a win against Australia.
